Page rank is very important because of a few things. The first reason is that Google is powerful and pretty much can determine if your site is successfully or not. Although Page Rank is very important to your website, don't make it your websites life. You should not go for PR and nothing else, but in a directory it isn't always the worse thing to do. (Directories is all about higher the PR the higher price you can charge.) But on most sites PR isn't as important, page rank just shows a estimate on how you are located in google's search engine. But sites can have a PR2 and be higher listed then a PR5 site. It is all about what keywords you are trying to go for and get as many backlinks that are relevant to that keyword.
